That afternoon, Patrick sat in his favourite cafe, the very same place where he had bumped into Rebecca barely a week ago. As usual, he sat near the window where he could gaze out and watch people passing by as he drank his coffee.

Sitting there alone with his thoughts he leant his forehead against the cool plate glass to try and stop his head from trembling. He didn’t notice the two girls at the till giggling at him. All he could think of was the horror that had taken place in Claydon Woods yesterday and he couldn’t stop his head and hands from shaking as he relived it. ‘Jesus, what the hell have I gotten myself into?’ he mumbled under his breath. ‘A week ago the most dramatic thing in my life was handling a group of boisterous kids in the classroom.

‘Now, all of a sudden, I’m involved in the death of a couple of gas-mask murderers and as if that isn’t enough, I get confronted by a seven-foot monkey-man wandering around the woods. Christ, it sounds like a Stephen King novel. All I wanted was a quiet meal with Rebecca to discuss old times and apologise for the way I dumped her. I certainly didn’t bargain for being dragged into the fucking Frankenstein Chronicles.’

He raised his mug of coffee to his lips. If only I had taken a later lunch that day. Taking a mouthful of the creamy latte, he closed his eyes as he savoured the comforting warmth. But when he reopened them he found a man with slicked-back black hair sitting at his table. The man was wearing a long raincoat and he regarded Patrick with his hard grey eyes. Almost choking, Patrick gulped down his mouthful of coffee.

‘I’m sorry to barge in on you like this, Mr Farrell, but I really need to speak to you.’

‘How do you know my name?’ Patrick asked.

The man smiled ruefully. ‘Please, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Samuel Olsen, Dr Samuel Olsen; I’m an anthropologist.’

Olsen, wasn’t that the guy who had been stalking Rebecca? Patrick asked himself under his breath. ‘So, what can I do for you?’

‘I need your help, Mr Farrell.’

‘In what way?’

Olsen put a finger to his lips as one of the girls who had giggled at Patrick came over and placed a fresh mug of coffee on the table. ‘Thank you,’ Olsen called after her as she went back to the counter. She turned and smiled back at him. He started to raise the mug to his lips but stopped before taking a sip. ‘I believe you and Miss Samuels happen to be in great danger.’

‘You don’t say.’ Patrick gave a mirthless laugh.

Olsen ignored the sarcasm and drank his coffee. ‘I understand that you both went into Claydon Woods yesterday?’

‘That’s right, we went for a walk.’

‘You do know that Claydon Woods have been closed off to the general public for quite a number of years, now?’

‘Really; and why is that, Dr Olsen?’

‘Apparently, there are extremely delicate plants and flowers in the woods that need to be preserved.
